Treadwell & Rollo managed a geotechnical investigation for new medical facilities at the VAPAHCS, including a new 3-story Polytrauma Building and 5-story Ambulatory Care Facility. Additional facilities included a new vivarium building, CUP building, water tank, new utilities and roadways.
We explored subsurface conditions by drilling 14 borings and advancing 8 CPTs. Site issues were evaluated, including seismic hazards, settlement, and the presence of expansive soil. We provided recommendations for mitigation of the effects of expansive soil, footing and pier support, excavations, backfill of utilities, and subgrade preparation for new pavement.
For the planned Polytrauma Rehabilitation Building, Ambulatory Care Facility, Blind Rehabilitation Center, Central Utility Plant and new water supply tank, Treadwell & Rollo evaluated environmental conditions to be addressed during redevelopment of part of the medical center. Field work included sampling and analysis of soil and soil vapor. Results were evaluated to pre-profile soil for management and disposal during construction and to assess potential for indoor air intrusion of volatile organic compounds from soil vapor.
Based on existing groundwater data, we also prepared a groundwater management plan for groundwater encountered during construction. We proposed additional soil vapor investigation needed to address changes to building design and to fill data gaps resulting from initial investigation investigations needed to prepare soil management plan.
