Dunsmuir Reservoir
- Client: East Bay Municipal Utilities District
- Location: Oakland, California
- Principals-in-Charge: John Gouchon and Frank L. Rollo
Treadwell & Rollo performed a seismic safety evaluation for the East Bay Municipal Utility District of Dunsmuir Reservoir, a 65-million-gallon reservoir 300 feet from the Hayward fault. We developed response spectra and acceleration time histories for a magnitude 7.25 earthquake on the Hayward Fault, including near-source effects; performed a soil-structure interaction analysis to estimate the forces imposed on the reservoir; and evaluated the stability and performance of the embankment, reservoir and appurtenant structure during the design event.
Geologic and geotechnical issues included secondary fault rupture, potential for strong ground shaking, soil-structure interaction effects, and embankment stability. Structural issues included hydrodynamic effects, performance of the perimeter wall, internal columns, roof slab and pipelines for the inflow/outflow structure.
